Materials Database Matmatch Launches

Matmatch launches materials database

We’re delighted to announce that Matmatch has now officially launched. In bringing the most comprehensive free materials database in the world to market, we’re offering engineers, product development teams, procurement professionals, and academics a new way to find, evaluate and source materials online. Try out Matmatch now.

Over the last few months, we have been working hard to develop a platform that combines powerful search tools with an intuitive and user-friendly interface. Our team of material scientists has also been busy sourcing and putting together data for tens of thousands of materials – almost 75,000 at the time of writing.

Here are just a few of the key features of the platform:

  • Search for materials by name, application, property, category, and shape and dimensions
  • Compare multiple materials in your browser
  • Save and organise materials that you’re interested in
  • Download material data in PDF and XLSX format
  • Find suppliers for your chosen materials

Why did we develop Matmatch?

Our mission is simple: we want to transform the materials searching and sourcing process. Until now, there hasn’t been a simple way to find materials, compare their properties, and source relevant suppliers. Matmatch changes that, giving users the power to freely search a database of thousands of materials, compare their properties side-by-side, share them with their team, and source suppliers that actually carry the materials.

The founding team interviewed hundreds of engineers and scientists and found that in the majority of cases, they were just Googling materials in order to find their properties. The average scientist or engineer did not have a single trusted source of materials information. What’s more, when they settled on a material to use in their project they had no way of knowing if it was actually the best fit or if there were other suppliers selling the material. On the other side, suppliers often find it difficult to communicate feature, applications, and benefits of their materials to potential customers.

Additionally, many of the existing search tools are behind a paywall, making Matmatch one of the only freely-accessible databases to end-users.

Matmatch is the first comprehensive platform to bridge the knowledge gap between buyers and suppliers of materials. The user-friendly platform streamlines the sourcing process from research to procurement within a single tool.

What’s next?

We’re just getting started and have big plans for Matmatch. As well as adding thousands of new materials to our database, we’ll continue to develop the platform to improve the search and sourcing process for material buyers. We also want to work with suppliers of all types of materials to help them reach a larger audience.

But we also want to be a place where people can share their knowledge. From the beginning, we have built-in features to enable this – every material page has a comments section that allows users to share their thoughts. People can share their experience and knowledge of a particular material with the entire Matmatch community. To get started, sign up for an account.

Want to get on board?

There are a few things you can do to help:

  1. Use the platform. If you’re not sure where to start, try this example search.
  2. Share Matmatch with your community. The more people we can reach, the better.
  3. Provide feedback. Got something to say? Email us with your thoughts.
  4. If you’re a supplier, get in touch to find out about being listed on the platform.

Thanks for joining us on our mission to empower engineers and product development teams to find and use the best materials on the market. One final thing – check back on our blog next week for some pictures from our launch event.
