Description

Materion’s O-30-H beryllium was originally developed to make the mirrors for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The unique combination of property characteristics make this material critical for expanding optical space applications. O-30-H was featured in Astro2010: The Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, Technology Development Papers, no. 23. In Enabling Future Space Telescopes: Mirror Technology Review and Development Roadmap, Dave Baiocchi of RAND Corporation and H. Philip Stahl of NASA Marshall discuss O-30-H beryllium metal and the ways it advances space optics.

In addition to the low scatter optics of O-30-H, this metal is well suited for a variety of other space applications. With the highest thermal isotropy of any grade of the beryllium metals that we offer, it is a cryogenically optimal substrate material.
