Melissa Albeck, CEO at Matmatch, has over 20 years of business development and general management experience. Before heading up Matmatch, Melissa worked as Managing Director of WNT China, General Manager of Plansee UK and Business Segment Manager at Plansee USA. She received her degree in International Business & German from Aston University. Melissa specializes in setting up new organisations, cross-functional team leadership and business strategy development.
Today we had a conversation with Melissa and she shared some interesting information about the company’s philosophy, corporate identity and visions for the future.

What is Matmatch?
At its core, Matmatch is a comprehensive database of engineering materials. Our materials data comes from multiple sources and is referenced with international standards. The Matmatch material science team aggregates and carefully verifies the data to ensure the quality of the database.
What does the name ‘Matmatch’ mean?
Matmatch consists of two words – “materials” and “match”, demonstrating our goal of matching people with the right materials and the right suppliers.
What is the idea behind Matmatch?
We are the first people to try to build a database of this size that is truly user-friendly, free to use and connects buyers and suppliers from all around the globe. When people look for information online, they typically use Google. We hope that Matmatch will become the leading search engine for engineering materials.
Why did you choose Munich?
The initial idea for Matmatch was born and developed in Manhattan Beach, California.
But we eventually decided to opt for Germany instead because it is the digital hub of Europe, and has a very strong corporate business base. We chose Munich in particular because of its strong base for engineering and materials science. Moreover, here we have access to universities (TUM, for example) and research institutions. Finally, Bavaria invests a lot into digitalisation so we hope to be able to collaborate with like-minded organisations in the region. (We also have the Alps on our doorstep which is no bad thing!).
What kind of culture are you trying to build in Matmatch?
Firstly, we are aiming to cultivate a very open, communicative culture with a flat hierarchy so everybody feels free to contribute and interact on the same level. Secondly, we need people who are flexible, since we have adopted the agile software approach and Matmatch is growing fast. Finally, we celebrate diversity. In our team of 26 people, we have 16 different nationalities, and we speak countless different languages. I think this is one of our key advantages.
Is there a hidden meaning in the Matmatch logo?
The Matmatch symbol has a chemical quality to it, which fits with our materials focus. It also represents the connections we are making. In the middle, we have the data; it is the focal point of the platform. Everything else revolves around this – our data connects the material science community, buyers and sellers, and people within the company too.
We chose blue because we feel it is associated with rationality, logic, and intellect, which are three common traits in our target audience. Also, the engineering industry is quite traditional, with very practical, tangible products, which again is reflected by this colour.
What is your favorite feature of the Matmatch platform?
I love the fact that a search on Matmatch can either be very broad or very specific. In one search bar you can filter by materials, properties, and even location. Try it yourself!
What is the biggest change you’ve seen in the industry in the past 10 years?
Obviously, digitalization is everywhere and the materials industry is not an exception. It’s all about automation and optimization at all stages: manufacturing, procurement, and logistics. I suppose unpredictability of the market is a big challenge, so companies have to learn how to be flexible. And by unpredictability I mean demand fluctuations, fast production stages and shorter development cycles – things come to market much quicker than they used to. Also while digitalisation of processes is already state-of-the-art for industries, the simulation and digitalization of materials and their properties has just begun to take hold. We believe Matmatch is well positioned to contribute significantly to this trend.
What are some ideas for the future of Matmatch?
Our goal is to become the go-to place for materials. We want to create not only a database, but a hub where material suppliers can easily showcase their products and users can effortlessly find materials they are searching for, and get detailed data on their chemical composition, properties, and applications.
