Welcome to the latest platform update from Matmatch. Here are the main topics we covered in September:
- New infrastructure for logging data
- More insights for materials suppliers
- Improved footer
Plus, we turned one. Read to the bottom to see a video summary of our first year in business.
New infrastructure for logging data
Yawn…right? Well, maybe not. We introduced a new infrastructure for logging data in September – which may not sound that interesting. But what it could allow us to do definitely is interesting.
Basically, we are now collecting anonymous usage data of Matmatch in a better way than we used to. What this means is that we’ll be able to do more with the data – which will help both users of Matmatch and our suppliers.
For our suppliers, we can give more insights into how potential customers are finding them. Not only that, we can show how their materials are being compared. There are many other possibilities, too.
We can also use insights from the data to improve our product. While we love getting qualitative feedback from users, quantitative feedback (i.e. data) helps us to find ways to improve at scale. So, in theory, the more data we collect, the more we can improve.
Just to highlight again – all these statistics are anonymous, so you needn’t worry about your personal data being shared (even if you’re logged in).
More insights for materials suppliers
If you read last month’s update, you’ll know that we improved the dashboard for materials suppliers. We introduced the ability to see stats over a longer period and added a map to show where interested buyers are coming from.
This month, we developed the dashboard further. Now, suppliers get insights into how their materials are being found. They can see which applications, material properties and material categories searchers used to get to their materials, as well the free text searches. Plus, we added a graph to show suppliers their total search reach on Matmatch.
As ever, this is a feature we’ll iterate and improve over time. But it has the potential to provide key insights to suppliers and help them develop their businesses.
Let’s take a very simple example. Imagine a supplier that gets most of their business from the automotive sector. They might imagine that automotive would be the top-searched application for their materials. But instead, the stats show aerospace is the top-searched application.
This could give them a hint that the aerospace market has potential and is one they should be addressing. While this is an oversimplification, it helps to show the value analytics like this could provide.
Last month it was the header. This month, we introduced a new footer. We changed the structure of the footer (how links are organised) and the design has changed a bit.
As ever, the reasoning behind the new footer is simple: it’s designed to make navigating the site easier. Plus, like the new header, it lays the groundwork for the future. When we add new areas or pages to the site, we’ll need to add links to them. The new footer layout allows us to do this while keeping the site easy to navigate.
Matmatch turns one
As you may know, last week we had our first birthday. We had fun celebrating the occasion in the office and taking a look back.
So, although this doesn’t relate specifically to an update we made in September, it is nonetheless fun to have a look back at what we have done over the year. Some key achievements include:
- More data: when we launched, our materials database was mainly metals along with a few ceramics. Now, we not only have more metals and ceramics, but have also added polymers, glass, composites, and even bamboo.
- Almost 800,000 users served (at the time of writing more than 100,000 people use Matmatch every month, and the number continues to grow).
- Hundreds of new features released.
It’s been a fun year! Have a look at our video review of the year:
