Description

Four times lighter than steel and yet about a third stronger, beryllium is a lighter option than aluminium as a structural material in spacecraft and high-speed missiles. It counts among its more remarkable properties a low neutron absorption cross-section, which makes this metal useful as a moderator or reflector in nuclear reactors. Its ability to slow neutrons down is only comparable to its inability to stop x-rays, which is why beryllium is the material of choice for the construction of windows in x-ray tubes. However, beryllium is considered a carcinogen, which can affect people via breathing, eye contact, or broken skin contact. That's why it is advised to reduce exposure to beryllium as much as possible.
