Description
This soft, silvery alkali metal is the sixth most abundant element in the earth's crust. It has similar properties to the other alkali metals including low melting point, very high chemical reactivity especially with water, low density and high thermal conductivity. This last property is responsible for its application in heat exchangers. Sodium's chemistry also makes it useful in the production of polymers, and even other metals. In organic chemistry, sodium is the starting material for the production of intense reducing agents such as sodium hydride and borohydride. Its most prevalent compound is sodium chloride (NaCl), which is commonly known as salt.
