Description

Zirconium is another member of the transition metals. Its highlights include good malleability and ductility, a very high melting point, relatively low density and excellent corrosion resistance, which make it useful as a hardening additive for alloy manufacturing, or as a coating to protect other metals against corrosive environments. This metal is used in many different industries, but one of its oxides, known as zirconia, has been proven to have excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility catering to its use in prosthetic implants, representing a good alternative to other metals such as medical grade aluminium or titanium.
