Description

Silver (Ag) is a white-shining, in very thin films blue-green translucent, in regular octahedra (cubic densest sphere packing) crystallizing metal. Ag is the most malleable metal after gold, can be pulled out to wire of 0.008 mm diameter and rolled out to the thinnest films. Silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals, plus the best reflectivity. Against oxygen and caustic alkalis, silver is very stable at normal and also at elevated temperature. In contrast, it has an increased affinity for sulfur. The sulfur compounds formed on silver objects blacken silver. Nitric acid dissolves it to form silver nitrate. Silver bromide decomposes under the action of light. However, it forms silver sulfide in a sulfur-containing atmosphere, which can be very disturbing for small contact forces, as they occur in the news and information technology. For larger contact forces, as they are common in power engineering, but silver sulfides do not disturb. Silver is relatively soft and is hardened in a manner similar to gold by alloying with Au, Pt, Pd, Cu, Zn, Sn, Cd, Si, Mg or Mn. With not too large proportions of the hardening metals, easily deformable alloys are obtained. Ag is also used as a coating material, it is plated on brass, copper and steel or a silver layer is electroplated (silver plating). Application: In the chemical technique for porous disks in filtration, as catalyst in catalysis. As a fusible conductor is pure silver (Ag1000) due to its aging resistance, its oxide-free surfaces and good solder wettability, its perfect contact and the fact that pure silver has a small melting integral, low heat of fusion (nimble fuses), very well suited for low-voltage and High-voltage high-performance fuses, used for power converter fuses and for miniature fuses. Silver is the most commonly used contact material, but tends to weld and has relatively high material migration. Ag is very ductile, sulfur-sensitive and oxidation-resistant up to 180 ° C. It is machinable, roll-cladable, electrodepositable and can be separated from the gas phase.
