Description

1.7227 (42CrMoS4) is a quenched and tempered steel that mainly used in automotive and vehicle construction. Because of its high strength is suitable for highly stressed components, such as steering knuckles, connecting rods, crankshafts, gear shafts, gears or pinions. Can also be used in mechanical engineering universally in the hardened and tempered and additionally surface-hardened condition.

Application areas

It is mainly used in automotive and vehicle construction for highly stressed components, such as steering knuckles, connecting rods, crankshafts, gear shafts, gears or pinions.

Heat Treatment

Normalizing 840-880°C (Air), Soft annealing: 680-720°C (Oven, slow cooling), Quenching: 820-860°C (Oil, Water), Tempering: 540-680°C (Air)

Hot forming

It is formable at 850-1100°C.

Processing history

Quenched and Tempered

Welding

It is difficult to weld and should will not used be in welded constructions. If welding is not an issue, the demanding requirements of welding filler by material manufacturers must be taken into account.. The main temperature is increased by heat treatment to equalize the structural condition.
