Description

Acidur 4401 is a stainless chrome-nickel-molybdenum steel and has good resistance against chlorinated media and non-oxidizing acids. After welding, Acidur 4401 is no longer resistant to intergranular corrosion. If larger areas have to be welded, the use of Acidur 4404 is recommended. Corrosion resistance of Acidur 4401 with polished Surface is much better than the one with a rough surface. Furthermore this grade is characterized by a good workability.

Corrosion properties

Very Good - Acidur 4401 shows a very good corrosion resistance in the presence of chlorides. Acidur 4401 shows excellent corrosion resistance in natural environmental media as well as in industrial areas with moderate chlorine and salt concentrations, in the food industry and in the agricultural food sector. However, according to DIN EN ISO 3651 part 2, Acidur 4401 is not resistant to intergranular corrosion. There is also no resistance to seawater.

General machinability

Machinability of the Acidur 4401 is harder than Acidur 4404 due to higher carbon content.

Heat Treatment

Solution annealing: 1020-1120°C (water, air) fast cooling

Welding

Excellent - Acidur 4401 shows good weldability with or without welding filler. If a filler metal is necessary, use 1.4430. The maximum interlayer temperature is 150°C. Due to the high carbon content, chromium carbides can form which reduces the resistance to intergranular corrosion. A heat treatment after welding is required. If this cannot be guaranteed, it is recommended to use the lower carbon variant Acidur 4404, the corrosion resistance is influenced by the heat input during welding.
