Description

The machinability of 1.4104 (X14CrMoS17) is far superior to that of the ferritic 17% chromium steel, 1.4016 as a result of the controlled sulphur addition to this grade of steel. The addition of sulphur however reduces the resistance to corrosion, and as such 1.4016 is significantly more resistant to corrosion than 1.4104, despite their similar chromium contents. It should be noted that as a result of the sulphur addition, neither minimum impact properties, nor elevated temperature properties are specified.

Equivalent Materials

This material data has been provided by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel (DEW).

"Typical" values were obtained via a literature search. "Predicted" values were imputed via artificial intelligence technology. While we have placed significant efforts in ensuring data accuracy, "typical" and "predicted" data should be considered indicative and verified by appropriate material testing. Please do contact us if additional information on the the predicted data method is required.
All metrics apply to room temperature unless otherwise stated. SI units used unless otherwise stated.
Equivalent standards are similar to one or more standards provided by the supplier. Some equivalent standards may be stricter whereas others may be outside the bounds of the original standard.

Technological properties

Property
Application areas

Automotive industry, Decorative applications, Kitchen utensils, Electronic equipment

Corrosion properties

Low - Although 1.4104, contains 17 % chromium, the corrosion resistance of this steel is severely compromised by the addition of sulphur. This is particularly true when exposed to environments that promote pitting and crevice corrosion. PRE = 16.16 – 19.48

General machinability

Very Good -The machinability of this grade of stainless steel is superior to other 12 and 17 % chromium steels as a result of the sulphur addition.

Heat Treatment

Soft annealing: 750-850°C (Cooling in furnace, air) - Hardening: 950-1050°C in polymer, oil, air - Tempering: 550-650°C air

Hot forming

It is formable at 800-1100°C

Processing history

Quenched and tempered QT 650

Welding

Poor - In general, 1.4104 is not welded, other than occasionally being friction or resistance welded.
